With so much money up for grabs on sites like DraftKings and FanDuel, algorithm-toting sharks have been making a killing at the expense of causal players. Some think that’s evidence that daily fantasy is destined to fail, but Dennis Spangler just defied those odds. The 28-year-old North Carolinian threw $40 into FanDuel last week and walked away with $150,000. (He caught the winning moment on video, too, which you can watch above.)

We sat down with him for a quick Q&A to see how it all went down:

Q. Do you play a lot of fantasy football?

Dennis Spangler: I don’t play that much, to be honest. I’m in a few different fantasy football pools this year, but that’s about it. Only fantasy football, never got into the other stuff.

Q. How did you get into FanDuel?

DS: I was just bored the other day sitting in the back seat of a car on my way somewhere, and decided to throw in $40. I put in $10 one time last season, so just decided to give it a try.

Q. Have you been following the FanDuel and DraftKings stuff in the news recently?

DS: A little. I haven’t paid too much attention. Some people are probably better at it than others, but I feel like we all pretty much have the same opportunity.

Q. So what was your winning lineup?

DS: Eli Manning, Devonta Freeman, Doug Martin, Odell Beckham Jr., Allen Robinson, Larry Fitzgerald, Antonio Gates, Bryan McManus and Denver’s defense.

Q. Why’d you go with those guys?

DS: I was looking for good matchups and with guys that not everyone would pick. I knew Beckham would have a big game, so I went with him and Eli. Denver’s defense had a huge week.

Q. At what point did you start to notice things were going your way?

DS: I was actually working on Sunday, so I was really tired when I came home. I checked my computer and saw that I was up to $50 and pretty much went straight to bed.

Q. And then the next day?

DS: I woke up the next day and saw I was up to $750 and in 82nd place out of something like 400,000 people. I still had Antonio Gates playing, so I did some quick math to figure out what it would take to jump up to first place.

Q. Were you nervous throughout the day?

DS: Not really, to be honest. It was such a long shot. I only got nervous two or three hours before the game. Had some friends over and started thinking, “I actually have a chance.”

Q. And then during the game?

DS: All my friends were over drinking and I was just pacing around, grabbing this football that I have with a huge knot in my stomach. I jumped up to $7,500 on the first drive because Gates had three catches and a touchdown. I was so nervous.

Q. What about that winning moment?

DS: Before [Gates’] second touchdown I was still four points away, but once he made that catch I knew it was over. We went nuts. It didn’t really hit me. It still hasn’t really hit me. Maybe it will once I get that check.

Q. Well, congratulations! What are your plans for the money?

DS: I’ve got about $12,000 in student loans that I’m going to pay off, then I’ll put the rest the away. Probably buy a new truck. I’m so stoked about it.

Q. Any tips for the rest of us?

DS: I don’t want to give away all my secrets! But I guess you should always look for matchups, and I’ll say this much: Defense wins championships.
